We’ve all been there—sitting in front of a stack of unread books, feeling completely uninspired and stuck in a reading slump. It can be frustrating when the joy of reading feels just out of reach. During one such period, I discovered a selection of books that reignited my passion for reading and reminded me of the magic that stories can bring. Whether you’re seeking adventure, deep emotional connections, or a little escapism, these titles helped me turn the page and find my love for literature again. Here are my top recommendations that might just pull you out of your own reading rut!
Change of genre has always been my mantra for breaking out from that reading slump. Since I read thrillers, I switch to romance and enjoy the light-heartedness, humour and portal of love in these books. So here are a few romance books that helped me gain my reading momentum.
1. King of Sloth by Ana Huang
Ana Huang is undoubtedly my favourite romance author of all times. King of Sloth is a stand alone book, fourth in the King of Sin series. This is the story of Xavier Castillo, a wealthy and carefree billionaire known for his laid-back lifestyle and penchant for partying, is forced to face reality when his father falls ill. His father’s will stipulates that Xavier must prove his ability to manage the family’s business empire, which leads him to work closely with Sloane Kensington, his ambitious and driven publicist. I read this book in a single-sitting and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
2. The Secret Finacée by Catherine Maura
The Secret Fiancée is a contemporary romance novel centred around the arranged marriage between Lexington Windsor and Raya Lewis. The story begins with a playful game of truth or dare, filled with laughter and a connection that Lex has never experienced before. However, he knows their meeting isn’t just a coincidence; he is already promised to Raya. As they navigate the complexities of their marriage and family dynamics, Lex grapples with buried trauma from his past that threatens to derail their relationship. This heartfelt and wholesome tale captivated me, and I loved every moment of it. This is the sixth book in The Windsor series, with each instalment exploring the story of one of the Windsor brothers.
3. Happy Place by Emily Henry
“Happy Place” by Emily Henry follows Harriet and Wyn, a couple who broke up but are pretending to still be together during a final vacation with their close friends. As they navigate the complexities of their fake relationship, unresolved feelings resurface, forcing them to confront their past while exploring themes of love, friendship, and personal growth. The book explores themes of love, friendship, change, and what happens when the “happy place” you built with someone else starts to crumble. It’s emotional, with heartfelt moments and the humour, making it both a touching and hopeful romance.
4. Twisted Lies by Ana Huang
Honestly, I’ve read this book twice! Another Ana Huang favourite—this story follows Christian Harper, the CEO of an elite security company, as he unexpectedly falls for shy, introverted social media influencer Stella Alonso. He presents her with a deal she can’t refuse, and soon the chemistry between them simmers to the surface. For anyone who enjoys a morally grey character, this book is a must-read. Trust me, you’ll love it! The characters are magnetic, and I simply couldn’t put it down. As the final book in the Twisted series, it takes you on an exhilarating journey filled with a beautifully layered love story.
More often than not, I find myself re-reading some of my favourite romance books or flipping through the little annotation notes on my Kindle. Once I’ve finished swooning over these fictional men, I dive back into thrillers. Here are some of the books that have reignited my passion for the genre and sparked my creativity to inspire my own writing!
1. The Only One Left by Riley Sager
The Only One Left by Riley Sager is a gripping psychological thriller that follows Kit McDeere, a home health aide who is assigned to care for Lenora Hope, the sole survivor of a gruesome family massacre decades earlier. Lenora, now mute and confined to a wheelchair, communicates only through typewritten notes. As Kit delves deeper into Lenora’s dark past and the mystery surrounding the night of the murders, she uncovers shocking secrets that put her own life in danger. The novel masterfully blends suspense, twists, and eerie atmospheres, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as the truth unfolds.
2. The Body In The Library by Agatha Christie
From the queen of suspense, The Body in the Library features the astute detective Miss Marple, who investigates the mysterious murder of a young woman found in the library of the wealthy Bantry household. As Miss Marple delves into the victim’s background, she uncovers a web of secrets and motives among a cast of intriguing characters. With her keen intuition, she pieces together clues, leading to unexpected twists and a surprising resolution. This classic whodunit showcases Christie’s signature storytelling and remains a favourite among mystery lovers.
3. Killing Moon by Jo Nesbo
This gripping crime thriller features detective Harry Hole. The story begins with a series of murders linked to a young woman’s death in Oslo. Amidst the growing tension, Hole grapples with his own demons and the fallout from his past decisions. The narrative is rich with twists and turns, exploring themes of morality, justice, and the complexities of human nature. As the investigation intensifies, Hole must navigate treacherous waters to uncover the truth before more lives are lost.
